We are excited to announce that THIS will start a more multilingual approach in the coming academic year. Although we are enthusiastic about how this will benefit students, we realize that some parents may not understand a multilingual emphasis or be cautious of having instruction in 2 languages.

The purpose / goal
THIS is already a multilingual school with a quality Norwegian language program. Having a better understanding of both Norwegian and English languages allows students to access local and global communities fluently. Students need more exposure to both languages so they can navigate the two linguistic worlds. The majority of graduating students attend a public high school / videregående where the language of instruction is Norwegian. THIS wants to best prepare students for the high school of their choice.

What is included in the multilingual model
Multilingual co-teaching is a collaborative teaching model where two teachers jointly plan and deliver curriculum in both Norwegian and English. The purpose is to expose and strengthen students’ language development, while maintaining strong conceptual understanding within subject areas. Multilingualism supports language learning by incorporating both languages into subject teaching, rather than teaching one language in isolation.

How
All students will continue to receive regular Norwegian language lessons throughout the school. In addition, PYP will include 4-5 hours of multilingual instruction in math and unit of inquiry lessons. MYP will include 2 multilingual subjects, humanities and math.
Why
Research shows that
- Strong first and second language development supports learning
- Multilingual students develop better flexibility in problem solving
- Students gain confidence in different learning environments
We want students to
- Develop strong academic skills that they can apply both locally and globally
- Become confident in their English and Norwegian language skills
- Be prepared for further education at the school of their choice
